Ontario G2 Road Test
Approx. 20 minutes
Obtaining your Ontario G2 licence (G1 Exit Test) requires satisfying minimum waiting periods, providing a roadworthy vehicle, and demonstrating foundational driving mechanics in residential and city environments.
Eligibility & Required Documents
- G1 Holding Time: Hold a valid G1 licence for at least 12 months, or 8 months if you completed a Ministry-approved Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course.
- Accompanying Driver: Arrive at the test center with a fully licensed driver who has at least 4 years of driving experience.
- Documentation & Vision: Bring your physical G1 licence card. Wear corrective lenses if required by an "X" restriction on your licence.
Vehicle Safety Requirements
Your examiner will cancel the exam if the test vehicle is unsafe. Ensure the vehicle has:
- Valid Documents: Current vehicle registration and pink liability insurance card present in the car.
- Working Lights & Controls: Functional brake lights, turn signals, hazard lights, headlights, horn, wipers, and seatbelts.
- Dashboard & Tires: Safe tires with sufficient tread and zero active warning lights (e.g., Check Engine or Airbag).
Key Skills Tested
The ~20-minute test focuses on essential driving maneuvers in city and residential areas (no 400-series highways):
- Basic Maneuvers: Smooth left and right turns, correct lane positioning, and proper intersection navigation with active scanning.
- Parking Mechanics: Parallel parking, backing into a parking space (reverse stall park), and hill parking (uphill/downhill with curb).
- Control Maneuvers: Pulling over for a safe roadside stop and executing a three-point turn on a narrow street.
- Observation: Continuously checking mirrors and performing physical shoulder checks for blind spots before turns, lane changes, or pulls away from the curb.
Day-of-Test Procedure
- Arrive 15–30 Minutes Early: Park according to the test center's setup (backing in if standard spots are used).
- Check In: Register your arrival and vehicle licence plate using the indoor kiosk or mobile system.
- Wait at the Car: Buckle up and wait in your driver's seat with the window rolled down for the examiner to begin the vehicle safety inspection.
