Selected

Earning your full Ontario G licence requires meeting strict eligibility criteria, supplying a safe vehicle, and proving advanced driving competence, particularly on high-speed roads.

Eligibility & Required Documents
  • G2 Ownership: Hold a valid G2 licence for a minimum of 12 consecutive months.
  • Highway Experience: Sign a declaration confirming you completed at least 5 trips on a 400-series highway or an 80+ km/h roadway in the past 3 months.
  • Documentation & Vision: Present your physical G2 licence card. Bring corrective lenses if your licence requires an "X" restriction.
Vehicle Safety Requirements

Examiners will cancel the test if your car fails inspection. Ensure it has:

  • Valid Documents: Up-to-date vehicle registration and pink liability insurance slip.
  • Working Lights & Safety Features: Operational headlights, turn signals, brake lights, hazard lights, horn, windshield wipers, and seatbelts.
  • Dashboard & Tires: Safe tires with adequate tread and zero active warnings (e.g., Check Engine or Airbag lights).
Key Skills Tested

The ~30-minute exam concentrates on high-speed flow and defensive driving, omitting basic maneuvers like parallel parking that were tested during the G2:

  • Highway Driving: Smoothly merging at traffic speeds (typically 100 km/h), executing lane changes with clear mirror and blind-spot checks, and decelerating on exit ramps rather than main lanes.
  • Traffic Control: Maintaining a 3-second following distance at high speeds and properly handling right-of-way, pedestrians, and cyclists on city streets.
  • Observational Habits: Checking mirrors every 5–10 seconds and moving your head to scan intersections continuously.
Day-of-Test Procedure
  1. Arrive 15–30 Minutes Early: Park by reversing into a spot so you can pull out forward to start the exam.
  2. Check In: Use the kiosk to log your arrival, verify your license plate, and submit your highway declaration.
  3. Wait at the Car: Sit in your vehicle with the window down for the examiner to conduct the initial safety check.
